How can the payroll revolution help your business stay payroll compliant?

A payroll blog, just what you have been waiting for! I hope you are as excited about it as me.

My name is Tracy Angwin. I’m the managing director of Australian Payroll Association and the bestselling author of The Payroll Revolution. I am also a corporate escapee and passionate about identifying and leveraging the value of the payroll operation in business.

After working in senior roles at some of the largest payroll vendors in the world, I started Australian Payroll Association to provide the support and advisory services that were lacking in the Australian payroll market. There really wasn’t a one-stop shop for employers to understand their obligations.

I have an obsession for improving payroll compliance and efficiency. And I’m particularly obsessed with doing this for small business.

Not only because I have one myself, but because small business are subject to the exact same payroll legislation and regulations as big business; but typically without the in-house expertise that is required to navigate the increasingly complex payroll environment in Australia.

Very few employees will ever thank you for getting their payroll right, and most will have no idea what effort goes into a compliant payroll function. But you soon know about it if you get it wrong.

Non-compliant payroll has far-ranging effects, and not just on the employees affected. The Fair Work Commission is the most highly resourced industrial umpire Australia has ever seen. They set many of the regulations around employment and payroll and are charged with policing them. Being a small business makes no difference to them when they are prosecuting employers and dishing out fines.

An example of this is a recent fine of $166,000 for a fruit and veg store that incorrectly employed workers as contractors, not employees.

The types of topics I’ll be covering include superannuation, motor vehicle allowances, terminations, employee vs contractor and the options you have in carrying out your payroll obligations. I’ll also be discussing Fair Work compliance and the most common things that small businesses get wrong.
