Samsung reveals 64-bit octa-core smartphone processor as union urges families to join leukaemia talks

Samsung has unveiled a smartphone processor dubbed the Exynos 7 Octa, with the new 64-bit chip boasting eight processor cores, as a leading trade union urged cancer victims to join peace talks with the tech conglomerate.

According to the Electronics Times News, the chip will switch between four high-performance ARM Cortex A57 processor cores and four low-power ARM Cortex A53 cores, depending on the task.

Based on ARM’s big.LITTLE technology, the chip will use the more powerful cores for tasks requiring a lot of processor power, switching less powerful cores for less processor-intensive tasks, saving battery life.

The chip is capable of ultra-high-definition (UHD) photo and video, as well as dual-image signal processing, meaning it can capture photos or videos out of both its front and rear camera at the same time.

Meanwhile, the Korea Times reports the Samsung General Labor Union has criticised Banolim, a victim’s rights group representing the families of Samsung employees who allegedly developed cancer while working at the tech giant’s factories.

The union says Banolim should join talks that are set to take place between the families of some victims and the tech giant, overseen by a three-member mediation panel led by the respected former South Korean Supreme Court justice Ji-hyung Kim.
