YouTube catches a criminal

A Bendigo man has been caught doing a burnout seven months after the fact, due to a video of the event being posted on YouTube.

Police say they were sent a link to the video from an anonymous tipster, which prosecutors forwarded to traffic management officers.

The police noted the white Commodore and a distinctive bumper sticker, which leading senior constable Peter Dyer saw at a service station just days later.

After investigations and interviews with neighbours, police approached the man and he confessed the incident. He faces careless driving, improper use of a motor vehicle and causing undue noise charges.

The story follows another of social networking detective work – a restaurateur who was left with a hefty bill after five diners escaped without paying, caught the offenders on Facebook.
