Internet giant Google has unveiled a browser-based app for its Google Voice service, undercutting a decision by Apple to ban a dedicated program from its App Store.
The web-based app, which allows users to control different aspects of their phone numbers and devices, can be used on the iPhone.
Last year Google said it had submitted a Google Voice app to the App Store for approval. The Google Voice service allows users to replace all their telephone devices with a single number, while the service itself allows users to customise ring tones, control who calls certain phones and the voicemail controls.
But Apple rejected the app, and the reasons are still unclear. The Federal Communications Commission is still investigating the matter.
However, the release of the new app allows iPhone users to use the service on their handsets. Users can access their Google Voice inbox, contacts and settings through the device.
