Facebook to turn Messenger into an online retail customer service and sales channel

Facebook has demonstrated a new feature of its Messenger app designed to turn its mobile messaging app into a customer service and sales channel at its f8 developer conference.

Called Businesses on Messenger, the feature will allow customers to receive order confirmations, shipping status updates and other information from online retailers after making a purchase. It will also allow customers to ask businesses questions, as well as modify, track or return an order.

Alongside Businesses on Messenger, Facebook is also adding the ability to install third-party apps that extend Facebook Messenger’s functionality, through a feature known as Messenger Platform. This will allow users to download apps that add GIFs, videos, audio clips and other media forms to their Messenger chats.

Businesses interested in signing up for more information about Businesses on Messenger can do so through a special page on the Facebook website, while more information on the Messenger Platform for app developers is available here.
