Visa approves Research in Motion’s BlackBerry 10 mobile payment platform

Visa has approved Research in Motion’s near-field communications (NFC) mobile payment platform, known as Secure Element Manager (SEM), ahead of the release of the company’s next-generation BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

RIM’s senior director of NFC services and TSM product management, Frank Maduri, says the move is an important step forward in the Canadian smartphone-maker’s mobile commerce strategy.

“The approval from Visa of RIM’s SEM solution is an important step in that it will enable carriers to support Visa issuing banks and financial institutions,” says Maduri.

“We now offer carriers a robust solution with around-the-clock global support that works on any NFC-capable device, and meets the stringent technology and usability guidelines for Visa.”
