US media giant has Twitter accounts hacked, suspended

US media giant CBS has had a number of its Twitter accounts suspended over the weekend, following reports the accounts were hacked.

According to Reuters, the accounts for popular CBS news programs 60 Minutes and 48 Hours were hacked over the weekend, along with its CBS Denver affiliate station.

During the attack, the hackers tweeted a message on the 48 Hours account claiming that “General Dempsey calls for #Obama’s arrest under new anti-terror laws #48hours”.

Following the rogue posts, the network tweeted “PLEASE NOTE: Our Twitter account was compromised earlier today. We are working with Twitter to resolve.” A second post read: “A message that was posted earlier to this account was not written or sent by @60Minutes or its staff.”

media account stating: “We have experienced problems on Twitter accounts of #60Minutes & @48Hours; We apologize for the inconvenience; Twitter is resolving issues.”

While the CBS Denver account appears to have been restored, both the 60 Minutes and 48 Hours accounts are displaying prominent messages stating: “The profile you are trying to view has been suspended. To return to your home timeline, click here.”
