Twitter joins standards body Linux Foundation

Twitter has joined an international standards body, the Linux Foundation, responsible for funding development of the open source Linux operating system.

According to Ars Technica, the decision comes after Twitter recently imposed new restrictions on its APIs, limiting the ability of third party apps to integrate with its social network.

The social media company cites its use of Linux servers and open source database programme MySQL, as well as other open source technologies, as key reasons for joining the organisation.

Linux Foundation states that it hopes to attract Twitter competitor Facebook to the organisation in the future.
