Telstra claims that it is selling about 40,000 devices per week for its 4G LTE mobile network.
According to ZDNet, Telstra has sold 300,000 4G LTE devices in total, including 70,000 smartphones, with the balance made up of tablets, USB dongles, and Wi-Fi hotspots.
It is worth noting that the figure is for devices rather than customers, meaning that a person with two devices (for example, a 4G smartphone and a tablet) would be counted twice in that number.
However, the numbers pale into insignificance when compared to the 2.5 million customers Telstra claims to have added to its Next G network over the past two years.
Nonetheless, the figure is significant because of the “out of the box” incompatibility between the 4G features of Apple’s new iPad and Telstra’s network, the 35.3% marketshare for Apple’s iPhone (there is currently no 4G iPhone), as well as the fact that 57% of Australians already own a smartphone (a higher percentage than most developed nations).
