Opera claims that its Opera Mini web browser now has 168.8 million unique users worldwide, an 8.1% increase over February 2012.
According to TechCrunch, the company also claims that 56% of its users access the web exclusively through their mobile devices.
The company claims the percentage of users accessing the internet through their mobiles is particularly high in emerging economies, in particular Brazil (65%), Pakistan (61%), Bangladesh (69%) and Egypt (72%).
Originally released for J2ME feature phones, the browser fetches websites through a proxy server and reformats pages and images for small screens.
