Microsoft has released a security patch closing a critical vulnerability in the Remote Desktop Protocol, which can allow hackers to install code on a Windows PC with no user interaction.
Ars Technica reports that the security vulnerability is present in Windows XP and all later versions, including preview releases of Windows 8.
RDP is a networking protocol used to remotely administer or troubleshoot Windows PCs and devices, including installing software. However, the company hadiscovered the same protocol can also be used by hackers to install malware on unpatched computers.
The company urges all users to immediately install the most recent patch, or if unable to do so, to enable Network level Authentication on all Windows PCs and devices.
