Mozilla Foundation, the publishers of the Firefox web browser, have backed down on a decision not to use the H.264 video standard or the HTML5 video tag, bringing industry standard video across all web browsers a step closer.
The announcement, made in a blog by Mozilla Foundation chair Mitchell Baker, means that Firefox will be able to use any video standard supported by the underlying operating system, including H.264.
H.264 is a high definition video standard supported by BluRay, HDTV, Apple QuickTime and YouTube.
However, it was previously not supported by the Mozilla Foundation on the grounds that it was covered by patents, making it difficult to integrate into a free and open source web browser such as Firefox.
