Facebook unveils plans for its own $US120 million company town

Facebook has announced plans to build a large 394-unit “company town” within walking distance of its Menlo Park headquarters.

Both the San Francisco Chronicle and The Wall Street Journal report the new complex will be known as Anton Menlo, and be constructed by property developer St Anton Partners based on a design by architects KTGY Group.

The $US120 million 630,000-square-foot complex will include a convenience store, sports bar, bike repair shop, a yoga room and a pet daycare facility.

There is currently a housing shortage in Menlo Park, with high real estate prices having an impact across Silicon Valley.

A Facebook spokesperson says staff retention isn’t a major motivating factor in the housing development.

“We’re certainly excited to have more housing options closer to campus, but we believe that people work at Facebook because what they do is rewarding and they believe in our mission.”

Facebook’s new facility comes a month after search and mobile giant Google unveiled plans for its own 51-unit apartment building near its headquarters in Mountain View, California.

The Anton Menlo development is still awaiting planning approval.
