Dell to start charging for operating system changes

Computer provider Dell will no longer sell computers installed with the Windows operating system XP, and will charge a $US150 fee to downgrade their purchased machine from Windows Vista.

Dell will offer Windows Vista Business Edition on its Vostra line of machines, but will charge if customers want to downgrade to a factory install of the previous operating system.

The move comes after Microsoft announced it will stop selling the XP software after 30 June.

Dell responded with their call to stop installing XP on their machines, but have taken advantage of Windows Vista’s downgrade capability in an effort to gain money from the service.

The downgrade capability is rumoured to last until next year, when Dell will no longer offer the XP software.
