A majority of Australians believe we are no longer a nation of innovators and are being overtaken by overseas businesses producing the latest consumer technology, new research shows.
More than 70% of 1234 Australians surveyed by research firm The Leading Edge said they do not believe Australia is a world leader in inventing new products and services.
And when asked to nominate the businesses they do see as innovative, it is overwhelmingly firms that produce whizbang consumer gizmos that get the nod, with Apple, Sony, LG, Samsung, Nokia and Panasonic topping the list.
Overall, however, the survey suggests most consumers don’t spend a lot of time pondering the ins and outs of innovation – of those surveyed, only 22% were able to name a specific brand they considered innovative and 45% were unable to recall anything at all.
