Apple has confirmed rumours about a forthcoming product launch by sending invitations to media outlets for an event on September 10.
As SmartCompany has previously reported, Apple is widely anticipated to launch a multi-coloured low-cost smartphone called the iPhone 5C at the event, alongside a new flagship phone called the iPhone 5S.
A built-in fingerprint scanner is widely anticipated to be a key feature of the new iPhone 5S, along with the release of iOS7.
According to Reuters, Apple’s press invitation cryptically reads “this should brighten everyone’s day,” coming a day after photos leaked purported to show the iPhone 5C in blue, pink, yellow and green.
Key rival Samsung is attempting to upstage the event by hosting a simultaneous launch of a new smartwatch, dubbed the Galaxy Gear, in New York and Berlin, along with the latest version of its Galaxy Note tablet.
Meanwhile, at the IFA trade show in Berlin from September 6 to 11, other competitors including LG are planning to unveil their own new devices.
