Apple is moving to significantly beef up its online content businesses by launching an online movie distribution service through its iTunes store this week.
Time.com reports that Apple will rent new release movies for $US3.99 and “weeklies” for $US2.99. Once you’ve downloaded and started watching the movie, you have 24 hours to finish it before it vanishes into the online ether.
The service launched in the US on Tuesday and will roll out internationally later this year. It works on Macs and Windows-based machines, not to mention portable devices such as iPhones, and iPods.
Of course, to take advantage of online movie services you need to have sufficiently fast broadband to easily download a movie – something many Australians don’t have. Bring on the national fibre network?
