Android hits 67% of global tablet market, Apple’s iPad marketshare slumps below 30%

Android now runs on two-thirds of tablets shipped worldwide, while Apple has slumped to below 30%, according to a new Strategy Analytics survey.

The Strategy Analytics figures put worldwide quarterly shipments of tablets for the second quarter of 2013 at 51.7 million units, or around 10 million units more than the TrendForce figures published by SmartCompany earlier this week.

According to Strategy Analytics, worldwide shipments of Android tablets during the second quarter of 2013 reached 34.6 million units, or 67% of the global market, up from 18.5 million and 51.4% a year earlier.

In contrast, Apple’s shipments declined from 17 million units last year to 14.6 million during the same time frame, as its marketshare dropped from 47.2% to 28.3%.

“Android is now making steady progress due to hardware partners like Samsung, Amazon, Google and White-Box tablets which, despite the fact that branded OEMs are lowering price-points and putting pressure on the White-Box manufacturers, are still performing well,” Strategy Analytics director of tablets Peter King says.

“Apple iOS shipments were 14.6 million iPads in Q2 2013 which declined 14 percent annually.  In the same quarter a year ago the first Retina display iPads were launched which could partly explain the decline as there were no new models in this quarter.”

Meanwhile, in a good piece of news for Microsoft, the marketshare for all versions of Windows grew from .5% to 4.5% as sales grew from 200,000 to 2.3 million.
