Over 300,000 credit cards compromised in attack

Citigroup has announced that more than 300,000 credit cards have been compromised in a recent attack that saw hackers attempt to steal some of the company’s confidential data.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company has said in a statement that “360,083 North America Citi-branded credit cards” were compromised in the attack.

However, Citigroup also says the number of active accounts affected is under that figure, and that the stolen information wouldn’t actually allow the hackers to use those numbers. The majority have already received placement cards.

The hacking attempt comes as a number of large corporates have been attacked in the past month – Sony was crippled for over a month by a massive attack that caused it to shut down the online PlayStation Network.
