Android market short on sales

New figures from Distimo show that despite the significant growth of the Android mobile platform, its apps may not be recording many downloads.

The company found that four out of five apps are downloaded fewer than 100 times, and that one in five of the free applications are also ignored.

“It is more challenging for developers in the Google Android Market than in the Apple App Store to monetise using a one-off fee monetisation model,” wrote Distimo, according to Information Week.

“We found that only two paid applications have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date, while six paid applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone generate the same number of downloads within a two month timeframe in the United States alone.”

The figures found only 96 apps have been downloaded more than five million times.
