Tech giant Apple has patented a non-exploding battery, according to Patently Apple, along with a patent for a new display that works while the user is wearing polarised sunglasses.
The patent recognises a safety issue with the current lithium ion batteries, which have the potential for gas buildup, and thus can explode and start fires.
Apple’s new design shows a new type of battery cell which includes a weak spot for relieving some pressure, and also has a stack of layers with which the battery is wrapped.
“This pouch includes a weakness which yields when internal pressure in the pouch exceeds a threshold to create a hole which releases the internal pressure,” the publication states.
