Not content with dominating online social networking, Facebook is teaming up tech hardware giants Hewlett Packard, Dell and Intel for an ‘open computer project’.
Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg says mass manufacturers hadn’t delivered what the social networking site needed, and he hoped sharing design specifications would lift demand.
Dell will build servers based on those technical specifications, while Synnex Corp will act as an overall vendor for the systems.
Under the plans, these servers will form the basis of Facebook’s first custom-built data centre.
