The number of apps in the Android Marketplace has topped over 100,000, according to a tweet sent out by Google’s mobile division.
The message was sent from the Android Dev Twitter account, which regularly updates users on happenings in the Android world.
The milestone is an important one for the company. As app stores become more popular and crucial in the life of smartphone usage, the number of apps is often quoted as a metric when judging the quality of a store.
The development also serves as an example of the growth of Android as a powerhouse in smartphone computing. The OS is just behind Apple in terms of popularity and chief executive Eric Schmidt often says the company is activating more Android handsets than Apple is.
However, Android still has a way to go before it can catch the App Store, which has over 280,000 apps.
