Tech giant Apple has patented a new system that can be used to project 3D images, without users having to wear glasses to view the broadcast.
The patent application was originally filed in 2006, but it has now been granted. The application states that there is an “urgent need is for an unobtrusive 3D viewing device that combines feedback for optimising the viewing experience in combination with provisions for 3D user input, thus enabling viewing and manipulation of virtual 3D objects in 3D space without the need for special viewing goggles or headgear”.
The patent also states that its purpose is to provide “inexpensive auto-stereoscopic 3D displays that allow the observer complete and unencumbered freedom of movement”.
The patent application comes after Nintendo announced its 3DS earlier this year, which will allow users to play 3D games without requiring glasses. The gadget is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year.
