Microsoft sues Motorola over Xbox payments

Software giant Microsoft has sued Motorola, saying the manufacturer is seeking unreasonable royalties for the technology used in the Xbox 360 console.

According to a claim filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, Microsoft has said that Motorola breached commitments made to organisations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Telecommunications Union.

Motorola said in its own statement that while it has previously held talks with Microsoft regarding a license agreement, “unfortunately, despite a fair offer from Motorola, Microsoft was unwilling to enter into a licensing agreement.”

The lawsuit comes after Microsoft launched a separate claim against Motorola last month, saying the company infringed nine patents through the use of the Google Android operating system.
