Many developers have attempted to create a web browser that could replace the iPhone’s native Web Safari app, but many are either too weighed down with unnecessary features or are just plain slow. But the new Opera Mini Web Browser app could end up luring a significant number of users away from the original.
Firstly, early reviews indicate the app is significantly faster than Safari, with TechRadar noting its home page loaded in 16 seconds, compared to 18.5 for the normal browser.
The tabbed browsing feature emulates desktop versions of internet software, while a “speed dial” function allows users to place several different pages on their home screen.
The browser doesn’t contain pinch-to-zoom functionality, but does include a double tap system, while an auto-correct feature is designed, according to Opera, to minimise typing. Fortunately the app is free, so users won’t lose anything but a few minutes if they decide to try it out.
