A filmmaker in Haiti who was trapped under rubble during the country’s devastating earthquake managed to survive after using an iPhone application to help him administer first aid.
Dan Woolley was captured under debris when the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince collapsed. He told the US Today show that he used the Pocket First Aid and CPR app to treat a fracture on his leg and a cut on his head.
“I was able to look up treatment of excessive bleeding and compound fracture, so I used my shirt to tie my leg and a sock on the back of my head and later used it for other things like to diagnose shock,” he said. He was trapped for over 60 hours.
After Woolley treated his wounds using advice from the app, he set his alarm to wake him up every 20 minutes, as it told him he should not fall asleep if he was going into shock.
But while Woolley managed to use an app to escape his predicament, his colleague is still missing in the wreckage.
