Qantas subsidiary Jetstar is set to introduce a new boarding pass technology that would allow users to enter planes using tickets contained on an SMS message.
The SMS boarding pass was developed during the past year by the Sissit Group in Melbourne, whose chief executive Aaron Hornlimann says the technology has already drawn the attention of some Asian airlines.
The boarding pass contained in the message is essentially a type of barcode that is scanned by the airport attendant. It contains information that is checked against an airport’s database.
According to Hornlimann, the SMS boarding pass system is able to be integrated with “at least 98%” of all mobile phones currently available.
A trial is expected to begin this month using passengers on domestic flights leaving from Melbourne’s Avalon airport near Geelong.
