Internet giant Google has released a free GPS navigations system for mobile phones using its Android operating system, with a new smartphone named “The Droid” the first to feature the new software. The device, which costs $US200 and is being hailed as another iPhone-killer, is running the new Android 2.0 operating system – the only OS that can carry “Google Maps Navigation”.
Like rival GPS applications, it features turn-by-turn directions, voice navigation and even includes life traffic updates and “street view” picture functionality, which shows ground-level pictures of locations.
The release of the application comes shortly after travel software maker TomTom released an app for the iPhone, which costs $100 for similar functionality.
Currently, no Australian release date has been set for “The Droid”.
