Apple disables iTunes sync with Palm Pre

Apple has disabled an ability within its iTunes software that allowed owners of Palm’s Pre device to “sync” their gadget with the program similar to an iPod.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told The Age that the update “disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre”.

Palm spokeswoman Leslie Letts said the decision was a “direct blow to their users, who will be deprived of a seamless synchronisation experience.”

The “sync” feature allows a user to download their iTunes media library on to their device with just one click. The company says users can still transfer music using a USB cable.

Apple signalled that it would shut down the ability recently with a software update, but did not mention Palm’s Pre device specifically. The relationship between Palm and Apple has been growing more frustrated over the past few months, as the Pre device was marketed towards users as an iPhone alternative.

Additionally, Palm now has former Apple executive Jon Rubinstein as its chief, the Apple employee who helped design the iPod.
