Coffee giant Starbucks to install wireless mobile phone chargers in US stores

Starbucks customers in the US will soon be able to charge their mobile devices wirelessly by placing the devices on tables and counters inside the coffee giant’s stores.

The Verge reports Starbucks will use Powermat’s wireless charging stations, implanting “Powermat Spots” into tables and counters.

In a statement announcing the move, Starbucks chief digital officer Adam Brotman said the national rollout comes after a pilot program was well received by customers.

“We were pleased with the customer response to the pilot tests, and we’re now expanding this offering nationally to provide our customers a quality and reliable experience as they use our stores as their respite, their office away from home or as a gathering place with their friends and family,” he said.

AT&T Mobility vice president, mobile devices and accessories Jeff Howard said the move is an important development for the mobile industry.

“Starbucks is a highly regarded global brand and its decision to rollout a Powermat network is both empowering and transformative for consumers and the mobile industry as a whole,” he said.
