Australia's gender pay gap has had its biggest single-year drop in almost a decade, but women are still earning much less than their male colleagues.

Businesses well advanced in their equity journey were seven times more likely to set targets to reduce gender pay gaps than firms just starting.

Australia has reached a landmark moment in the battle to close the gender pay gap by passing the  Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (Closing the Gender Pay Gap) Bill in Senate.

A slight improvement in the national gender pay gap to 13.3% has been reported, bringing the current status quo to Australian women pocketing, on average, 87 cents for their work to every dollar earned by a man.

According to the World Economic Forum, closing the global gender gap will now be pushed back by an entire generation — from 99.5 years to 135.6 years.

Companies with at least 250 staff could have the size of their gender pay gap revealed publicly, under a plan from the federal Labor party.
