By now you’ve probably heard that online marketplace Etsy is coming to Australia and will soon set up a showroom in Melbourne as part of a broader push into this country.
I hadn’t really heard much about the platform until today, but essentially it’s an online platform dedicated to hand-crafted goods. Not exactly my cup of tea, but I can see the attraction.
While we all know about big market places such as eBay and Alibaba, the emergence of niche markets like this is fascinating to me.
If you think about it, there are now hundreds of online marketplaces for goods and services. There are sites selling websites, domain names, graphic design services, consulting services, goods of all types and even entire businesses.
Start-ups need to explore these. If you are a retailer with a shop front in Sydney, an eBay shop might be the perfect way to dispose of obsolete stock.
If you are printer in Brisbane, an online marketplace might be the perfect place to sell spare capacity.
You cannot afford to leave any stone unturned and these small opportunities could add up to big business.
