Do the work and get the most out of your systems

New gadgets can boost your productivity. But you have to learn how to use them first.

Now, I am pretty hopeless when it comes to technology.

When I buy a new gadget – and I do love a gadget – I am usually straight down to see the boys and girls in IT so they can help me sort out how to use the thing.

But the other day I saw someone worse than me. It was a saleswoman who had come in with a new iPad to show off her latest product.

Only problem was, she couldn’t use the thing very well. Switching programs, taking us through the presentation, showing off her product – it was so clunky that it was painful to watch.

As she left, I called up my sales manager with a simple question: Do all those sales people who have iPads know how to use the bloody things?

New gadgets and systems and hardware are great, but to get the best return on investment you need to ensure that staff are properly trained.

Technology is great, but to get the full benefits you need to invest time (and potentially money) teaching staff to maximise its full potential – even if it is something as simple as using the iPad properly, or learning all the shortcuts on your Word processor.
