Apple has acquired Australian entrepreneur John Papandriopoulos’s start-up SnappyLabs, publisher of the rapid fire photo app SnappyCam, which can take up to 30 full-resolution photos per second, better than the iPhone’s own camera in burst mode.
TechCrunch first reported on the acquisition after discovering the SnappyCam app disappeared from the App Store, and SnappyLab’s website went blank. Previously the app sold for $1.
Founder John Papandriopoulos studied at the University of Melbourne and has a PhD in electrical engineering.
TechCrunch reports he will join the team at Apple to continue to develop the project.
Apple has confirmed the acquisition in a statement to Re/code. While the Apple spokespeople wouldn’t speak to the specifics of the deal or plans for the acquisition, they did confirm the purchase.
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” an Apple spokesperson told Re/code.
