Forbes has welcomed a number of notable newcomers to its World’s Billionaires list, including the founders of fashion brands Diesel and Tory Burch, and China’s version of Steve Jobs.
Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list is the definitive list of the world’s wealthiest people, profiling and ranking billionaires from 64 countries by their estimated net worths.
In terms of the tech scene, this year’s list contains all the usual suspects – Bill Gates, Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg, who, at 28 years of age, is the second youngest person on the list.
However, there’s also a bunch of newcomers who are worth mentioning. This year, 210 people have joined the Forbes billionaire ranks. Here are a few of the standouts.
Renzo Rosso
Rosso is the co-founder of lifestyle brand Diesel, which he founded 35 years ago when he was just 23. In 2012, Diesel had revenues of $2 billion, while Rosso has a net worth of $3 billion.
Through a holding company called Only The Brave, Rosso has spent the last decade snapping up majority stakes in up-market European fashion houses such as Viktor & Rolf and Marni.
Lei Jun
With a net worth of $1.75 billion, Jun is heralded as China’s version of Steve Jobs. He became a billionaire in 2012 thanks to the soaring valuation of smartphone company Xiaomi.
Lun is the co-founder, chairman and chief executive of Xiaomi.
Nicholas Woodman
Woodman founded GoPro, the world’s fastest-growing video camera company. It is favoured by extreme sports enthusiasts because the cameras are built to handle rugged conditions.
In December 2012, Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn bought an 8.88% stake for $200 million, valuing the company at $2.25 billion and turning Woodman into a billionaire.
Edward Stack
Stack’s fortune comes from the publicly traded Dick’s Sporting Goods chain.
The roots of the business date back to 1948, when his father opened a fishing bait shop in New York with $300 of his mother’s savings. Stack has a net worth of $1.1 billion.
Hamdi Ulukaya
Ulukaya, who also has a net worth of $1.1 billion, is the founder, president and chief executive of Chobani Inc., maker of Chobani Greek yogurt, which is headquartered in New York.
Since shipping out its first order in 2007, the company’s annual sales have grown to nearly $1 billion.
Tory Burch
Burch joins this year’s list thanks to the incredible growth of her women’s wear brand Tory Burch, which raked in $800 million in revenues last year.
Burch is the second youngest self-made female billionaire in America, beaten only by Spanx inventor Sara Blakely.
In December, Burch’s ex-husband sold part of his 28.3% stake in Tory Burch LLC, valuing the entire company at more than $3 billion. Burch has a net worth of $1 billion.
