It’s such a great feeling to help someone, resolve a problem or get your priorities in order. Why do we keep forgetting this? Why do we get swept away doing too many things and then all too often we are left feeling stressed, overwhelmed and running out of time?
If you are feeling frustrated with your work, too rushed or overwhelmed, then try some simple strategies to get yourself feeling great. Because when you feel positive it helps the people around you to feel good.
1. Help someone else. We tend not to do this when we are busy yet this is a perfect time to make someone else feel special – and in turn this has a big impact on your own wellbeing. Go out of your way, make a special effort, help someone with a task they are struggling with, or follow up something or someone you have kept putting off and apologise and get it done. That way you are helping yourself directly and the other person. It may only takes a few minutes. This is a way of “giving back”. What could you do every single day for the rest of this week?
2. Leave your desk and walk. Maybe you are someone who does a good amount of exercise. Most people don’t do enough. Too many of us are spending more and more time glued to their computers. Or is it just me? We have to get up and walk away. Choose someone to walk with that you need to meet with, and instead of sitting at their desk, walk out of the building. It’s too easy to sit at the nearest coffee shop – go an extra block. Talk and walk. Make it a habit. Make this difference to yourself if you have become stuck for too long at your desk.
3. Enjoy your priorities – but reach goals! What can you complete today? This week? This month? This quarter? We need to complete more and feel good about it. Set deadlines and stick to them. We need to get little things done that get avoided – efficiently. These hold us back from the big things that need our focus. When you are on the phone stand up and clear your desk while you talk. Even if you file one thing. Throw out one thing; nothing too distracting, but something that moves you forward. Get your goals listed and in view.
4. Go back over unanswered emails and deal with them. A quick response might be all that is needed. But make it happen. Don’t let you work become like an oil slick. Get back on track and make each Friday a great feeling rather than a time when you feel battered and exhausted.
5. Do something needed at home. Are we too focused on work? Are you allowing a repair or a special job to get avoided? Have you stopped enjoying your fun times with your loved ones? The balance you create is critical to success.
Just keep focused on being more of a GA (Goal Achieved) person than a “Gonna”.
