National Safe Work Australia Month: Best practice – a look at workers’ compensation

October is National Safe Work Month, a time to commit to building safe and healthy workplaces for all Australians.

Workers’ compensation insurance can be a significant cost to business, and claims management can be complex. Poorly managed claims and return to work can have significant detrimental effects on not only the injured worker, but also their colleagues and the business more broadly.

Biz Better Together and SmartCompany have partnered to deliver this educational event that will cover the common issues faced by employers with workers’ compensation.

This free breakfast briefing will bring together a panel consisting of: an employer representative; rehabilitation specialist; insurance representative; and safety regulator to discuss good practice management of claims, roles and responsibilities and how to achieve better outcomes for all.

Speakers

Elizabeth Greenwood
Liz is the Policy Manager Workers Compensation, WHS and Regulation at the NSW Business Chamber and, as well as lobbying the NSW government to effect regulatory change in order to make improvements in these fields, Liz also sits on a number of consultative forums. Prior to this, Liz held various senior management roles at the Housing Industry Association, primarily in relation to policy development and member servicing with a focus on helping small businesses comply with regulations that apply to the residential construction industry. Having practised both as a commercial litigation lawyer and also as an insolvency accountant, Liz is passionate about helping businesses develop practical solutions to overcome regulatory hurdles in order to survive.

Peter Meighan
Peter is the Operations Manager, Prevention & Pricing, Workers Insurance, icare. Peter has more than 16 years experience in the Insurance industry across a number jurisdictions, including workers compensation insurance, CTP, and dust diseases. Previously he held senior positions with Broker firm AustBrokers ABS and with Scheme Agent EML, in Relationship Management, Underwriting and Claims Management, providing advice on premium, return-to-work and general risk management and mitigation  to an extensive range of large clients across industries including, corporate, transport, construction, aged care and manufacturing.

Spencer McCabe
Spencer is a Registered Nurse and has a Masters Degree in Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment. He has worked in the insurance industry within the UK and Australia over the past 18 years, specialising in rehabilitation and claims management. Spencer performs the role of Manager Claims Supervision with the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), seeking to positively engage with workers compensation insurers to build capability and promote optimal outcomes for workers following a work related injury.
