Brewer pays staff to be healthy

Melbourne micro-brewer Mountain Goat has thought of an effective and simple way to help the health of staff and the environment.

The boutique brewery, located in Melbourne inner city suburb of Richmond, pays staff $1.50 for every day they cycle, walk or use public transport to get to work. Employees can at the same time avoid peak hour congestion and pocket a neat little sum.

“As a result we have bicycles all over the place, a happy and healthy workplace and employees seek out our company for employment. We have 11 staff members and only six car spaces. Even those six spaces are very rarely full, as we all love cycling to work,” says Fiona Johnston, general manager at Mountain Goat.

She would love to see other small businesses take the same initiative, and contribute to lessening peak hour traffic jams.
