Stress is something that every entrepreneur needs to learn to live with and deal with. There are lots of strategies, but some (such as exercise and relaxation) are much better than others (such as alcohol or drugs).
Some solid stress-busting strategies include:
Attack the problem. Perhaps the best way to deal with stress is attack the cause of the stress. If you are having a particular problem with your business, sit down calmly and assess it, and then come up with a plan to address the issue. Bring in resources or outside help where necessary, and get it fixed.
- Get onto issues early. Problems tend to get worse the longer they are left to simmer. Dealing with potentially stressful issues early prevents stress from compounding.
- Make time to relax. It is hard for an entrepreneur to switch off from work, particularly when they are starting their business. But setting aside a block of time to do something relaxing and non-work related – seeing a movie, dinner with friends, a sporting event – can help you clear your head.
- Exercise and stay healthy. When you are feeling tired and rundown, stressful situations can become even more stressful. Remain healthy and keep your energy levels high and you’ll be better placed to tackle problems.
- Lean on your support networks. Mentors, family and friends are all there to help, so don’t be afraid to bring them in to help you tackle problems head on.
