Outspoken tech entrepreneur and Rich Lister Ruslan Kogan has run into a spot of trouble with the law – but it has nothing to do with his $250 million online retail powerhouse.
Kogan, who is one of Australia’s richest men under 30, had his BMW car impounded and his licence suspended after driving more than 35 kilometres over the speed limit in the Victorian suburb of Albert Park, which hosts the Formula 1 racing every year.
A Victoria Police spokesman told SmartCompany the incident occurred in October 2011, although was only heard in court this week. Fairfax reported the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court was told Kogan was speeding at 85 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Kogan’s BMW was impounded at the time. The specific stretch of road is notorious for attracting many high-speed automotive antics.
SmartCompany contacted Kogan and Kogan’s legal representative, Dennis Miralis, but no reply was received prior to publication.
A Victoria Police spokesman told SmartCompany it believes hoon driving is “something that really concerns us because it creates a public safety issue”.
“Hoons aren’t necessarily always irresponsible teenagers – we can find hoon drivers in all demographics.”
The Melbourne Magistrate’s Court ordered the suspension of Kogan’s licence and imposed a fine of $500.
Kogan has been a prolific name in Australian tech news. Most recently, his company enjoyed victory in a court battle against telecommunications services provider ispONE.
Kogan’s business has also increased in scale to reach $250 million in turnover, with Kogan’s personal wealth reportedly increasing to $145 million, according to BRW.
