Unit pricing proposal before Senate

Family First leader, Steve Fielding, will introduce a proposal today in the Senate to make it compulsory for supermarkets to display unit pricing on groceries.

Unit pricing means that in addition to the price of the product, the price for a particular unit of measure – for example, per 100g or per single item for a multi-pack – is also displayed.

Aldi introduced unit pricing in all 167 stores last November. Woolworths quickly followed with an announcement it too would trial unit pricing in a select number of outlets.

Fielding’s Family First is in favour of the move as it would enable consumers to save money.
