Telstra catches iPhone craze

Telstra is catching up on the Apple iPhone craze, with the carrier now likely to stock the 3G device next month, but still may be weeks later than its competitors.

The Australian reports an insider as saying Telstra’s target launch date is 22 July, 11 days after Apple’s iPhone worldwide release, and that several of Telstra’s retail executives were given a preview of the device.

If the reports are accurate, the only major carrier left to offer the new 3G iPhone is Hutchison’s 3, which has remained silent on any plans for the gadget.

Vodafone and Optus were the first two carriers to advertise pre-release deals for the phone, but are still yet to reveal any pricing for contracts, or whether they will sell the phone “outright”, not attached to any plan.

Apple opened their first Australian retail store in Sydney yesterday, hoping to extend their market base in the country.
