New figures from research firm Telsyte suggest 30% of all phones sold will be smartphones in the near future.
With the release of the 3G iPhone, the G1 Google-phone, Nokia’s N-series and BlackBerry devices, smartphones are taking over the market in a big way.
While Telsyte says one would expect the market to shrink following such dramatic economic turmoil, the exact opposite is happening – mostly due to the fact they are sold on 24-month contacts, spreading the cost out.
Telsyte research director Warren Chaisatien argues these phones are gaining popularity, and it isn’t set to fall any time soon.
He told itwire.com that 2008 “has been the year of the smartphone in Australia, with a record 50 models introduced this year alone”.
“The rise of next-generation smartphones is the emergence of open-source mobile platforms, such as the new Symbian and Google’s Android, which is forcing established vendors like RIM and Microsoft to watch their backs.”
