Cadbury recalls chocolates as China toxic milk crisis continues

Cadbury Eclairs are the only Chinese-made product sold by the company in Australia. London-based Cadbury is withdrawing a total of 11 products across China and the export markets of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.

It is not yet known whether the products contain the melamine-laced milk which has killed four babies and sickened another 54,000 in China, but a Cadbury spokesman said the withdrawal was a precautionary step.

“It’s a completely voluntary action that we are taking in the interests of consumer health,” Cadbury spokesman Daniel Ellis said on Monday night.

“It is because it was made in China and we’re taking every precaution, but we are also undertaking testing as well. We just don’t want to take any chances.”

Cadbury says the recall does not affect Cadbury’s Pascal Eclairs, which are made in Australia.

A large number of Chinese milk and milk-related products have been taken off shelves around the world after it was revealed that some milk had been contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical.
