Our swimmers may be as fast as any in the world, but when it comes to iPhone download speeds Australia lags at the back of the pack, a new survey suggests.

Wired recently polled more than 2600 people around the world on their experience with their 3G iPhone, of which 233 were Australian.

Australian iPhone users reported average data download speeds of 759Kpbs, the slowest in the world.

It seems it is Optus and Vodafone that are letting the side down, with iPhone users with these carriers reporting average speeds of 390Kpbs, the slowest of all the world’s telcos.

Telstra did better; its customers reporting average speeds of around 990Kpbs, putting them on level pegging with several other carriers around the world including US giant AT&T.

iPhone users Germany and the Netherlands enjoy the fastest downloads, where they clock very fast average download speeds of 2000Kpbs.
