American app buyers paying more

A new study has found mobile users in North America are paying more for their applications than other consumers around the world.

According to the Getjar report, undertaken by Chetan Sharma, smartphone apps in North America have an average price of $1.09, while in Europe that price is below $0.80 – providing good incentives for developers to head to the US.

“With the consumer appetite for mobile apps rocketing, the opportunities for developers are huge,” GetJat chief executive Ilja Laurs said in a statement.

The study also found that the number of application downloads is expected to grow from seven billion in 2009 to 50 billion by 2012, while the amount of revenue from paid downloads, advertising and virtual goods is expected to rise from $4.1 billion to $17.5 billion.

The report also found that the value of apps sold will be greater than the value of CDs sold in 2012, at $13.83 billion.
