Two thirds of the world’s population now use a mobile phone, with usage increasing in industrialised countries and new demand for mobile data increasing across Europe, the United States and Japan.
Figures from the European Information Technology Observatory show the number of mobile users was expected to jump from 3.9 billion during 2008 to 4.4 billion during 2009 – a massive increase of 12%. ??”The strongest growth in the use of mobile phones now comes from newly industrialised and developing countries,” EITO chairman Bruno Lamborghini told ITWire.com.au.
“In Europe, the USA and Japan, the trend is for high-quality multimedia mobiles with Internet access,” Lamborghini said.
The figures also show the number of mobile users in India is set to grow by 32% during 2009 to 457 million, with growth in Brazil expected to come in at 14% to reach 172 million users.
