Australians crazy about SMS

One-third of Australian respondents in a survey about SMS texting say they use SMS to communicate about major life events, the Telstra’s State of the Nation Report shows.

The survey, which questioned about 1200 Australians, found that 25% would SMS the news of a birth, 18% would SMS the news of a promotion, while 40% send between three and seven text messages a day.

About 44% of respondents said they would use picture messaging while travelling, 33% while buying houses and 33% during the birth of a child.

Mark McCrindle, futurist and social researcher, told ITWire.com.au that the report shows how society is changing in regards to communicating with mobile devices.

“Telstra’s State of The Nation report reveals the uptake and influence of mobile technology on Australians, particularly texting. The fact that one in three prefer texting to other communication forms, signals the natural fit of this technology to our increasingly time-poor, busy lifestyles,” McCrindle said.

Telstra Country Wide’s general manager for Melbourne, Patrick O’Beirne also told ITWire.com.au that texting has become an “indispensable part” of people’s lives.

“This has revealed some interesting results and social insights about Australia as a text crazy nation,” O’Beirne said.
