The operator of Melbourne’s tram network, Yarra Trams, has released its own iPhone application that allows users to track the city’s trams in real time.
The new application, tramTRACKER, gives the user the location of each tram using the phone’s GPS system. A user can pick any tram stop within the network, and receives up-to-date information on travel times for that particular stop.
The service is completely free, and mirrors similar programs released for the country’s capital city rail networks, such as MetroMelbourne, MetroSydney and MetroBrisbane.
Yarra Trams chief executive Dennis Cliche said that travelers have used the existing tramTRACKER online services over one million times since 2006, and the iPhone application should continue the service’s “ongoing success”.
